London Underground 1938 stock (ex Isle of Wight) Carriage
Built in 1938 in Birmingham by Metro-Cammell, these deep-level tube trains were revolutionary. They were the first to have their traction equipment under the floor, freeing up valuable extra space for passengers. These iconic trains have had a long life, serving the Underground between 1938 and 1988. The Isle of Wight welcomed them from 1989; finally retiring them in January 2021. But their story doesn’t have to end there… perhaps you can continue their story.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With all of these units destined for scrap or preservation, act quickly to secure this piece of transport history. The carriage was used on the Island as a donor vehicle in later life, so it will require a full restoration and extensive works. We can arrange that at cost, to suit requirements. From a brief inspection, it's clear that many interior and exterior fittings need attention and replacing/sourcing - some of which are:
* Light covers
* Electrical equipment
* Door buttons
* Floor vinyl
* Some windows
* Drivers seat/controls
* Flip down seats
* Minor interior panels
This is not an exhaustive list - it’s merely a guide from initial inspection of the vehicle. Your plans may not require all of those items to be replaced.
If you like it, we can help you fix it. It could make a superb cafe, Air BNB, office or outbuilding. And in taking this on, you prolong the story of these amazing machines.
