Everyone loves a passion project and Shed Number 2 has a unique opportunity for the railway enthusiast, small business or historian. The 1938 London Underground tube stock served the capital for 50 years. But some moved to the Isle of Wight to have a more energetic retirement. For sale is a carriage from one of the island’s trains. When it joined the Isle of Wight line, it was given a TOPS classification as the Class 483. This is car 225, which part-formed unit 483002.

Built in 1938 in Birmingham by Metro-Cammell, these deep-level tube trains were revolutionary. They were the first to have their traction equipment under the floor, freeing up valuable extra space for passengers. These iconic trains have had a long life, serving the Underground between 1938 and 1988. The Isle of Wight welcomed them from 1989; finally retiring them in January 2021. But their story doesn’t have to end there… perhaps you can continue their story.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With all of these units destined for scrap or preservation, act quickly to secure this piece of transport history. The carriage was used on the Island as a donor vehicle in later life, so it will require a full restoration and extensive works. We can arrange that at cost, to suit requirements. From a brief inspection, it's clear that many interior and exterior fittings need attention and replacing/sourcing - some of which are:

* Seat cushions
* Light covers
* Electrical equipment
* Door buttons
* Floor vinyl
* Some windows
* Drivers seat/controls
* Flip down seats
* Minor interior panels

This is not an exhaustive list - it’s merely a guide from initial inspection of the vehicle. Your plans may not require all of those items to be replaced.

If you like it, we can help you fix it. It could make a superb cafe, Air BNB, office or outbuilding. And in taking this on, you prolong the story of these amazing machines.

Since this sale has received considerable press and social media attention, we are selling these units only to those who are serious about nurturing them. These are artefacts of British transport heritage with a well documented story - and as such, deserve tender care in the next chapter of their life. If you feel as much for them as we do, you may be the ideal purchaser. We have up to three carriages on offer and we will donate 10% (ten per cent) of the proceeds of each carriage we sell to the London Transport Museum, to help them continue the restoration work on their collection that we admire and wholeheartedly support.

Moquette is super-duper tough. If it gets a bit dirty, a good firm brush should do the job... For something really stubborn try some carpet cleaner. If in doubt - drop us a line.
