SELNEC/GMT 1970s tartan check

This moquette was the standard seat upholstery for Greater Manchester Transport (GMT) in the 1970s and early 1980s . It was introduced in the early 1970s (during the SELNEC/GMT era) as part of the new unified bus design. Initially, this patterned wool fabric was used only on lower-deck seats, with upper decks trimmed in plain vinyl or leather a practice meant to ease cleaning on smoking-designated upper decks . As the fabric proved durable, later production double-deckers (e.g. Leyland Atlanteans and Daimler Fleetlines) carried the moquette on all seats, upstairs and down . The pattern remained in service through the late 1970s and into the early ’80s, until it was retired around 1984 when GMT adopted a new “salt-and-pepper” style black moquette with orange flecks as the standard . This change reflected evolving design trends and a shift in corporate colours, marking the end of
Its decade-long tenure on Manchester’s buses.

Care Instructions

Moquette is super-duper tough. If it gets a bit dirty, a good firm brush should do the job... For something really stubborn try some carpet cleaner. If in doubt - drop us a line.
